Solomon Thomas Named New York Jets Nominee for Walter Payton NFL Man of the Year Award

Winner Announced at NFL Honors on Thursday, Feb. 6

The New York Jets announced that Solomon Thomas has been selected as the team’s nominee for the Walter Payton NFL Man of the Year Award. The Walter Payton NFL Man of the Year Award is the league’s most prestigious honor, recognizing players who excel on-the-field and demonstrate a steadfast commitment to creating a positive impact beyond the game.

As the co-founder of the nonprofit organization, The Defensive Line, Solomon Thomas is steadfast in his mission to end youth suicide and raise awareness about mental health. His dedication is evident in his inspiring public speaking engagements, where he shares a message of hope and the importance of wellness. By collaborating with organizations such as the Clinton Global Initiative, the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention, Crisis Text Line, and Vibrant Health for the 988 campaigns, Solomon has become a leading advocate for mental health awareness and suicide prevention, encouraging open conversations and reducing stigma.

In 2024, Solomon expanded his impact on the community through meaningful initiatives. He sponsored a young and upcoming soccer player through the Big Brothers Big Sisters program, providing critical support to help nurture talent and ambition. He also continued his tradition of hosting free youth football camps, giving middle and high school athletes the opportunity to learn from elite coaches and players while fostering a love for the game.

In addition, Solomon demonstrated his commitment to combating food insecurity by donating $8,000 to the Interfaith Food Network and volunteering at local food pantries, ensuring families in need were supported. His contributions extended to the Market Street Mission, where he donated $5,000, further reinforcing his dedication to helping underserved communities.

“I am deeply honored to be nominated for the Walter Payton Man of the Year award by the New York Jets for the third time,” said Thomas. “This recognition highlights the power of using our platform to make a positive impact off the field. I am committed to advocating for mental health and supporting others in meaningful ways. Thank you to the Jets organization, the Tri-State community, my family, and my teammates for this incredible honor.”

Through his unwavering focus on mental health advocacy and community service, Solomon Thomas exemplifies the profound influence athletes can have beyond the game. His dedication to improving lives and creating opportunities continues to inspire change and foster hope in countless individuals.

“Solomon’s commitment to giving back and serving others motivates everyone around him to pursue positive change, on and off the field,” said Jets President Hymie Elhai. “The significant impact he has made on the Jets organization and the greater community inspires important conversations about mental health awareness. Solomon’s efforts to prioritize mental health will continue to create a lasting impact on young athletes as they advance in their future and careers.”

Each nominee will receive up to $55,000 and the award winner will receive up to a $265,000 donation to their charity of choice. Donations are made possible by the NFL Foundation.

All 32 nominees will be recognized for their achievements during the week leading up to Super Bowl LIX in New Orleans. The winner of the 2024 Walter Payton NFL Man of the Year Award will be announced during NFL Honors, a primetime awards special to air nationally on FOX and the NFL Network on Thursday, Feb. 6.

Fans are once again encouraged to participate in annual Charity Challenge, a social media and online contest that allows fans to show support for Solomon Thomas. Fans can vote on X/Twitter by posting #WPMOYChallenge along with “Thomas” or @SollyThomas90 or by voting directly on www.NFL.com/ManOfTheYear. The nominee who receives the most collective hashtag mentions and online votes will win an additional $35,000 donation to the charity of their choice, with the runner-up receiving $10,000 and the third-place winner receiving $5,000. Charity Challenge voting takes place from Thursday, Dec. 5 through Sunday, Jan. 6.

Beginning Week 14 and continuing through the end of the season, each of this year’s nominees, including Solomon Thomas, will wear a special Walter Payton NFL Man of the Year helmet decal in recognition of their accomplishments on and off the field.
