Large emergency response at Wentworth School in Scarborough
11 students taken to hospital after falling ill at Maine elementary school
Emergency services personnel responded to a Scarborough school Thursday morning after nearly a dozen elementary students started feeling sick inside the building, including one student who passed out.
Scarborough Fire Chief Rich Kindelan said at about 10:07 a.m., the town’s Public Safety 911 Center received a call from the Wentworth School reporting a potential gas leak as some children were feeling ill and experiencing respiratory distress.
Scarborough Public Schools Superintendent Diane Nadeau said about 120 third- and fourth-grade students were assembled on the risers of the stage in the school’s cafeteria to rehearse for an upcoming concert when one of those students passed out. Nadeau added that other students then began complaining of respiratory illness.
Emergency crews responded to the Wentworth School shortly after the 911 call was made. First responders then upgraded the incident to a mass-casualty incident within a few minutes of arriving at the school.
“It sounds very daunting, but that is really a technical term that really sets the operation and allows us to contact additional resources as we need them,” Kindelan said.
Kindelan and Nadeau said 11 students were transported to area hospitals for further evaluation and, in some cases, as a precaution.
Nadeau said the Wentworth School was evacuated and students were walked over to Scarborough High School, where they waited indoors while Wentworth was being assessed by firefighters.
