China announces it will restrict exports of 7 rare earth metals critical for high-tech industries, including samarium, terbium, and lutetium.
China has decided to restrict exports of seven rare earth metals critical for high-tech industries — a direct response to U.S. tariffs.
From now on, foreign companies won’t be able to buy these materials freely — they’ll have to undergo scrutiny over who is buying and why.
These metals (such as samarium, terbium, and lutetium) are essential for producing electronics, military equipment, and engines. China controls nearly 70% of global rare earth production and uses it as a geopolitical lever.
Following the announcement, shares of Chinese and Australian rare earth mining companies surged. Previously, Beijing had already imposed export restrictions on other critical minerals like gallium and graphite.
Two of the most widely used rare earths — neodymium and praseodymium — were not included in the latest list. They are key components in powerful magnets used in electric vehicle motors.
