Speaking up for the USMC, while in Vietnam I did an in country transfer from the US Navy to the USMC.
I was granted a one months loan to be repaid in 6 equal payments back to the US Navy.
Once out with the platoon (think the Movie “Platoon”) I was due to receive my monthly military payment
certificate (MPC – Monopoly money, but spendable and printed better). It did NOT arrive.
I complained to the USMC Sergeant about it, so he said we would fix it. I was to catch the next helicopter
flight back to Field Regiment HQ, then take the back of a troop transport truck sitting on the bleacher
seats with dusty non-working M16s for looks the twenty mile ride into Danang Division HQ.
I made the trip to speak with USMC Treasury personnel. When queried about the 6 month loan with six
equal payments he said “Nope, this is the USMC. You had one months pay coming, one months pay due.
Continuing on he stated “And besides that the way it worked out, I would have had to put your name with
a big 0 after it wasting that sheet of paper. Do you realize we have to ship that paper in from the US?
That costs us a lot of money, taxpayer money supporting you over here. That is another reason we did not
make you an interest free loan on your pay.”
I did take that admonishment, transferring to Recon right there in Division HQ with a lot of helicopter flight time!
It was a lot more interesting than hanging out with the Platoon!!! This is true, DS
