What if we’ve been doing strategic planning all wrong? It’s a bold question, but hear me out. As entrepreneurs, we’re wired to be problem solvers—it’s practically in our DNA. It’s called “Future Search”, and it’s an amazing planning method I learned in grad school that literally transformed how I do strategic planning.  Since then, it’s helped me reframe and discover business opportunities that were hiding in plain sight.

Most of us plan by looking at what’s broken and trying to fix it. Right, so what’s the problem? The focus on fixing problems will tether you to the past rather than propelling you toward your vision. 

Future Search is different. It forces you to ask: What’s possible if we built from our mission, vision, and ideal customer dreams instead of bandaging what’s broken?

This process isn’t about troubleshooting; it’s about creating. And for anyone trying to innovate (or even just make sense of the chaos), it’s a game changer.

Future Search: A Process That Brings Everyone—and Everything—Together What Exactly Is Future Search?

Future Search is a collaborative strategic planning process that focuses on creating from the future into the present.  

In essence, it’s a visioning process where you outline and describe a vision for a future state and then work backwards to create the systems and processes that will take you there. 

My favorite example comes from Amazon.  Amazon’s management team creates a clear visualization of an ideal outcome – no matter how insane it sounds: “Our customers click a button, the doorbell rings and their product is there.” or taken a step further, you purchase something and it appears in front of you. 

Granted, this isn’t possible, but if you’ve been purchasing on Amazon, you’ve already experienced the increase in delivery speed from a week, to a few days to sometimes within an hour. 

The Core Principles of Future Search

• Everyone Gets a Voice: Even if you’re working solo, think about all the perspectives that influence your business—customers, employees, suppliers, partners, your community, or even your future self. Imagine what they’d say and include their input.
• Focus on the Big Picture: Start with your vision, mission and values before diving into the nitty-gritty.
• Build on Shared Desires: Conflicts often reveal valuable insights. Pay attention to them, but let your vision anchor the process.
• Take Ownership of the Outcome: Whatever action plan you create, commit to following through. You’re the boss here.

How to Use Future Search in Solo Sessions

Small business owners don’t have the luxury of lengthy planning retreats, or dozens of team members from different departments. But you can adapt Future Search to fit your schedule. Think of it as a series of focused sessions, designed to help you unlock big ideas without losing momentum.

Session 1: Reflect on the Past

Start by mapping out the journey that brought you here. Create a timeline of key events, decisions, and milestones in your business. What patterns do you see? What lessons can you pull from your wins and your struggles? Once you have a clear picture, consider how these insights shape where you are now.

Try This to Get Started:

Use sticky notes to list out milestones or significant events.  For example, one note might say “Got the idea in a coffee shop”, or “My first client” – and how you got them. 

Illustrate your milestones. This is my favorite method because it forces you to use icons, pictures or illustrations instead of words.  This is valuable because using images (even stick figures) actually accesses a different part of your brain and will uncover new and unseen opportunities. 

Session 2: Analyze Current Trends

What’s happening in your industry right now? Grab a notebook and jot down the trends, challenges, and opportunities that stand out. Don’t just focus on your niche—look at broader societal shifts or tech advancements that could impact your business. This session helps you identify where the winds of change are blowing.

Try This to Get Started:

Create a collage. Grab a bunch of magazines and pull out pictures that represent current trends. This will help you access more emotions than just writing things down.  This will help you uncover those power words that grab attention. 

Session 3: Envision Your Ideal Future

Set aside time to dream big. What does your ideal business look like in three to five years? Describe it in vivid detail. How do your customers feel when they interact with you? What kind of impact are you making? This is where you let go of practical constraints and imagine the best possible outcome.

This is where you want to invest a lot of your time and energy – like 90% of it.  I highly recommend using pictures and images as much as possible.  Do everything in your power to craft and describe the ideal and desired outcome in as much vivid detail as you possibly can. 

Session 4: Identify Common Ground

Review your notes from the first three sessions. What patterns are emerging? What aligns with your core mission and values? Highlight these common themes and use them as the foundation for your strategy. This step is crucial for keeping your vision focused and actionable.

Session 5: Create an Action Plan

Now it’s time to get practical. Based on your ideal future and the common themes you identified, outline the steps you need to take to move closer to your vision. Prioritize actions that will have the biggest impact and set realistic deadlines for each step. Remember, progress beats perfection every time.
