Surviving anaphylaxis: Immediate care and long-term recovery

% of readers think this story is Fact. Add your two cents.

Anaphylaxis is a severe allergic reaction that has the potential to become life-threatening as it causes the body to go into shock. It is classified as a medical emergency as a result of its sudden onset and the fact that immediate medical intervention is required. The primary treatment is an epinephrine injection into a muscle, as well as intravenous fluids. The patient must also be placed in a reclining position, with the feet elevated, in order to restore normal blood flow throughout the body. Those who know that they’re prone to severe reactions should always carry an EpiPen, but even in the case of administration, an ambulance must still be called immediately.

Getting to a hospital is an absolute must for all cases, even if medication has been taken in response or the symptoms seem to be improving in order to prevent lasting health damage. If you’ve experienced an episode like this, here are some of the things you should be aware of as you begin to recover.

The duration

The duration of an episode and how much it takes to feel better following anaphylaxis varies depending on the person. In some cases, symptoms can improve in only a few hours, while for others, it can take several days to feel well again. It’s important to give yourself time to recover during this time in order to heal completely. Doctors will prescribe the adequate treatment depending on the particulars of your case, and it’s important to follow through with it. If your anaphylactic shock was the result of someone else failing in their duty of care towards you, then you should learn about how to sue a company in order to obtain the compensation you deserve.

The most common scenario in this sense is that of having an allergic reaction at a restaurant. When you have allergies, you already know the steps of informing the kitchen so that there’s no cross-contamination involved. If you have a reaction the result is most likely to be due to someone being careless when handling your food. In some cases, people have severe reactions to as much as a few crumbs of a particular food or ingredient, and the tiniest exposure to their allergen is enough to kickstart a potentially life-threatening reaction.

Prevention

As with all health concerns, it is always better to prevent them than to treat them. Avoiding allergens at all times is a must. It’s not just you that should be careful as well, but the people around you as well, whether it’s your family, partner, friends, or co-workers. For example, if you have airborne allergies to pet dander, perfume, or cigarette smoke, it might not be a good idea to sit next to a fellow employee who could expose you to any of these things. If your partner is a huge fan of peanut butter and you’re severely allergic to it, it’s important that they brush their teeth as thoroughly as possible and wait at least four hours before attempting to kiss you.

If you’ve experienced anaphylaxis before, you can wear a medical identification bracelet or even a necklace that will alert others about what’s going on in case they cannot recognise what a reaction looks like. Carry epinephrine with you at all times so that it can stabilise you at least a little bit until you’re able to get medical attention. You might also want to consider allergy shots, a treatment that can reduce the severity of your symptoms as well as their incidence. They are part of a treatment scheme known as immunotherapy, and each shot contains a small amount of the allergen.

The mechanism used here seeks to make your immune system used to the allergens in order to recognise them in the future and not overreact to them in the future. These shots are particularly beneficial if standard medicines cannot control your symptoms anymore or if you are deathly allergic to things that are very difficult to avoid, such as insects. If you need to take other medicines and they would interact negatively with the ones you take for your allergy, the side effects impact your daily life, or you’d like to reduce your need for allergy medication over the long term, these shots would also be beneficial for you.

However, they are only an option if you’re allergic to insect stings, indoor allergens, or seasonal factors such as hay fever. They aren’t used for food allergies because the potential for anaphylaxis is too high, so the risks outweigh the benefits.

Complications

The most common complications associated with anaphylaxis include hypotension (also known as low blood pressure), hypoxemia (which occurs as a result of a drop in the level of oxygen in your blood), and organ dysfunction. When you arrive at the hospital, you’ll receive adrenaline, either via drip or injection, oxygen, and fluids. Most patients have to spend anywhere between two and twelve hours in the hospital, but some might need to stay longer. If any complications have occurred, doctors will want to monitor your condition longer until you are completely out of the woods and you get the green light to go home.

Before leaving the hospital, you will receive adrenaline auto-injectors that you will need in case you have another reaction shortly after. If it’s your first time experiencing anaphylaxis, you will be referred to a specialist who will perform tests in order to determine what caused the reactions. You will also receive advice regarding how to manage the condition in the future in order to minimise your risk.

Having an allergy is often challenging, since the symptoms don’t only depend on yourself, but on all the people around you and your environment as well. While some people have very mild reactions, if you know that your allergies are severe you will want to be extra careful. This can naturally become exhausting and frustrating at times, and it’s important to acknowledge that.

However, that doesn’t mean you should disregard the importance of prioritising your safety and well-being at all times.
