The New Malta Citizenship by Direct Investment - What Changed
Malta is a favourite holiday destination for those looking to escape the hustle and bustle, bask in the sunshine, immerse themselves in architecture and history and, of course, get a taste of the Mediterranean lifestyle. However, sometimes a holiday there just isn’t enough. Maybe you’ve decided to take the plunge and move to Malta? Imagine being able to call this stunning destination ‘home’ and not have to leave after a short visit.
With that said, anyone who has an interest in moving to Malta would be wise to educate themselves on the new Malta citizenship by direct investment. Not only is this a unique programme, but it has also undergone some important changes that potential new citizens will need to be aware of. This programme makes it possible for you to obtain Maltese citizenship for you and your entire family so that you can call Malta home.
What Does Malta Citizenship by Direct Investment Even Mean?
If this is the first time you have heard of the MEIN citizenship by direct investment programme, then it may sound a bit confusing at first. The term MEIN stands for Maltese Exceptional Investor Naturalisation and is a procedure in which people can get Maltese citizenship by making a direct investment in Malta.
It is described as an “exceptional service to Malta”. Because of the fact that you need to invest in the country, the programme tends to attract those with a high standing, if you will. The government sees these investments as a way to keep the Maltese economy robust and attractive to those who live in the country as well as internationally.
What Has Changed in the Programme?
While the programme itself isn’t new, there were changes that the government confirmed in July 2020. Those who wished to apply for Maltese citizenship by investment were given until September 2020 under the old rules. The new Malta Citizenship by Direct Investment programme then came into effect on November 20th, 2020.
The new programme lays out the steps people can take to get Malta citizenship for individuals as well as dependants by making a government contribution. This contribution must be made before citizenship will be granted. The amount that you need to contribute will vary, which is stipulated.
There also needs to be a donation of €10,000 made to a non-government registered society or organisation.
And that’s not all; there is also a property investment requirement which states that people need to lease a property in Malta which has a minimum annual rent of €16,000 – and agree to rent the property for five years. If you would rather purchase a property, it needs to have a value of at least €700,000. That property then needs to be held as an investment for five years. It’s clear to see how this path to citizenship very much gives back to the economic climate and situation in the country.
Be Aware of the Eligibility Criteria
Making these investments will only be part of the process, as you also have to meet the eligibility criteria laid out by the government. Each member applying for citizenship needs to pass a rigorous background check. You will also need to declare each person as “fit and proper”, and the Oath of Allegiance to the Republic of Malta must be taken.
Be Prepared for the Processing Fees as Well
As you add up how much money it will take to become a citizen in Malta, be sure to also add the processing fees. These are made up of a citizenship application fee, an eligibility fee and a residence application fee. These fees are on a per-person basis.
Why Make the Move to Malta?
You may be concerned about how expensive the path to Maltese citizenship is and whether or not it is worth it. The fact is that Malta has a lot going for it, which is attracting people to take the plunge and immigrate.
Some of the standout reasons for choosing Malta include:
- A strong and stable economy
- The official currency is the Euro
- The country has a low unemployment rate
- The public school system is free
- The country has two official languages – Maltese and English, which breaks down language barriers for many
- It is centrally located in Europe, making it a short flight to such European hubs as Rome, Istanbul, London, Barcelona, Frankfurt and Paris
- The climate in Malta is favourable all year round and boasts more than 3,000 hours’ worth of sunshine yearly
- It is known for its beaches and water sports
- Malta’s healthcare system is robust and is mostly universal
If you’ve been eyeing Malta as a potential new home, knowing how its citizenship by direct investment programme works will be incredibly important in the process.
