Gary comments on a recent article by Pastor Kevin DeYoung about pastors becoming “political pundits.”

The claim of neutrality by Christians is judged harshly in the Bible: “I know your deeds, that you are neither hot nor cold; I would that you were cold or hot. So because you are lukewarm, and neither hot nor cold, I will spit you out of My mouth” (Rev. 3:15–16). Standing in the middle of a moral position is not neutrality. David Chilton writes:

The Laodicean church brings neither a cure for illness nor a drink to soothe dry lips and parched throats. The sort of Christianity represented by Laodicea is worthless. The church provided neither refreshment for the spiritually weary, nor healing for the spiritually sick. It was totally ineffective, and thus distasteful to its Lord. Thus, says [Robert] Mounce, “the church is not being called to task for its spiritual temperature but for the barrenness of its works.”

This explains Christ’s statement: I would that you were cold or hot. He is not saying outright apostasy is preferable to middle-of-the-roadism; rather, He is wishing that the Laodicean Christians would have an influence upon their society.

The modern church that refuses to take a stand against the evils of the day is good for nothing. In the gospels, Jesus explains it this way: “You are the salt of the earth, but if the salt has become tasteless, how will it be made salty again? It is good for nothing any more, except to be thrown out and trampled under foot by men” (Matt. 5:13). Supposed neutrality is a lamp that’s put “under the peck-measure” that leaves the house in perpetual darkness (5:15) and a city’s light that’s hidden so it does not serve as a beacon to weary travellers (5:14).

Gary comments on a recent article by Pastor Kevin DeYoung about pastors becoming “political pundits.” While it is true that many pastors simply comment on politics without making any reference to the Bible, our current situation is most certainly a biblical issue. Staying out of politics is not the correct response; bringing the Bible to bear on politics and culture is.
