When I was in the Army, one of the places I was stationed at was Yong Son Barracks – Seoul, Korea; with the 501st Military Intelligence Battalion, PIC-K (Photo Interpretation Center-Korea) as a 97 Bravo – Intelligence Analyst. I had a Top Secret SBI (Special Background Investigation) clearance. When I was with Military Intelligence, we did some very interesting things. On one day, we were told to take off our MI (Military Intelligence) insignia because we were visiting the 38th Parallel South Korea Conference Table. The “38th Parallel South Korea conference table” refers to the special table located within the Joint Security Area (JSA) in the Korean Demilitarized Zone (DMZ), where representatives and dignitaries from North and South Korea meet for official talks; the table is significant because it sits directly on the 38th Parallel, the dividing line between the two Koreas, symbolizing the physical boundary between the nations during negotiations. Our Captain told us not to look at the North Korean guards directly. He also told us that when we walk on the North Korean side of the table, do not touch the table, because it could cause an international incident. Dummy me, I placed my camera on the North Korean side of the table while I was on the North Korean side of the table. My Captain almost had a heart attack and screamed for me to remove my camera off the North Korean side of the table. When I got back to my barracks, I got a good chewing out. That is something I will never forget, that was in 1981 and I still tremble thinking about it.

There was only one thing scarier than placing my camera on the North Korean side of the conference table, it was my encounter with the Butterfly Man. The Butterfly Man was a soldier stationed at Yong Son Barracks from 1977 to 1978. Butterfly Man was known to hang out in Itaewon, a party place for American soldiers. Butterfly Man got his name by the ladies of the night. They said that Butterfly Man was like a butterfly, going from flower to flower. Butterfly Man was basically a womanizer and was known to have many sexual conquests in Itaewon. Butterfly Man died in a training exercise and his spirit was seen several times in Itaewon. Some of the ladies of the night who encountered Butterfly Man say that he would touch them inappropriately.

I learned that a Hungry Ghost originated with Taoism religion, Buddhism and Chinese traditional folk religion. Anyone can become a Hungry Ghost if during their lifetime they killed, raped, stole, ventured in sexual misconduct, had strong evil desires, had violent tendencies, always unhappy, had greed or was always angry. I learned Butterfly Man during his time in Korea, went to Itaewon every night, hunting for a prostitute. He had an insatiable hunger for sex with different women. The ladies said he was a “regular” and that his lust was spooky at times. The ladies said that Butterfly Man came back to Itaewon because he is now a Hungry Ghost and is still seeking out ways to satisfy his sexual desires. Some of the ladies claimed that Butterfly Man would also leave scratch marks on their bodies. During the day Itaewon was an open market and I would go there to feast on Korean Bulgogi and Kimchi. On one particular day I was eating Bulgogi at an outside cafe. I was talking to my girlfriend at the time named Yoon Sook Lee. Yoon screamed and claimed she saw the Butterfly Man. I turned around and looked and didn’t see anything. Yoon started crying and had 3 scratch marks on her back. There was no explanation on how she got those 3 scratch marks. Then things got weird, because on 3 of my fingers on my right hand, I had what looked like blood on my fingernails. I did not scratch Yoon, but here I had what looked like blood on my fingers. We immediately left the cafe. I learned later that the cafe was a favorite spot for Butterfly Man to hang out when he was alive.

I have traveled all over Asia. I have been to Taiwan, Hong Kong, China, South China Sea, Macau, Thailand, Pattaya Island, Burma. Tokyo – Japan and all of the Asian countries I visited, people have stories about Hungry Ghosts. The people of these Asian countries truly believe that Hungry Ghosts exist. I have a tendency to believe them also. I experienced an encounter with the Butterfly Man.
