In 1969, my brother Andy was living in Newark, New Jersey and every morning he would commute 33 minutes to the Flatiron Building. One of Andy’s occupations was in construction and Andy was involved with renovating some areas of the Flatiron Building. I asked Andy if this building was haunted. His answer was…”yes, the Flatiron Building in New York City is known for its ghost stories. Many people have seen full body apparitions roaming the hallways”. Andy worked with two other construction guys named Harry and Luis. Harry and Luis claim that they saw a middle-aged woman in a long dress floating down the hallway. As they watched her, she turned to her right and walked right into a wall. Harry and Luis knew that they had seen a ghost. Andy said that the only experience he had, that he can call supernatural is when he was working on a door and something yanked out his screwdriver from his work belt and threw the screwdriver on the floor. Andy believes that a ghost did this. Let’s find out some history of this historic building.
ACCORDING TO WIKIPEDIA:
The Flatiron Building, originally the Fuller Building, is a 22-story, 285-foot-tall (86.9 m) steel-framed triangular building at 175 Fifth Avenue in the Flatiron District neighborhood of Manhattan in New York City. Designed by Daniel Burnham and Frederick P. Dinkelberg, and sometimes called, in its early days, “Burnham’s Folly”, it was opened in 1902. The building sits on a triangular block formed by Fifth Avenue, Broadway, and East 22nd Street—where the building’s 87-foot (27 m) back end is located—with East 23rd Street grazing the triangle’s northern (uptown) peak. The name “Flatiron” derives from its triangular shape, which recalls that of a cast-iron clothes iron.
Here’s a more detailed look at the Flatiron Building’s haunted history:
Like many historic buildings, the Flatiron Building has a reputation for being haunted. Apparitions have also been seen in its narrow hallways and old-fashioned elevators. Some instances include a shadowy figure jumping off one of the balconies onto the sidewalk below. The building has a grim history with many people having died during its construction and also because many people have decided to end their lives in this iconic building. Some people say they see apparitions, ghosts, or specters appearing on the 86th deck and in the restrooms. In 2011, General Manager Rosanne Martino mentioned that the establishment was most definitely haunted, as she herself had had “inexplicable experiences”. On the 9th Floor people have claimed to hear the musical sounds of a harmonica. A guest named Thomas Leon was on the 9th floor and heard the sounds of a harmonica. To his surprise he encountered the “Harmonica Lady” blowing into her harmonica. She had reddish hair and wearing what looked like overalls. Thomas thinking she was a real person told her that she played the harmonica well. She looked up at Thomas, smiled and then faded away. This reminds me of when my sister Sharon visited the Castel Boccale in Italy and heard stories of the “Lady of the Lyre”. People would hear musical notes from a Lyre. Some people saw a delicate looking woman playing a lyre and she would also smile and fade away.
The Flatiron Building is quite famous. It has appeared in many movies and TV shows. In 1987, the building was used as the scene of a murder for the TV series Murder, She Wrote, in the episode “No Accounting for Murder”. In the 1998 film Godzilla, it is accidentally destroyed by the US Army while in pursuit of Godzilla. It is depicted as the headquarters of the Daily Bugle, for which Peter Parker is a freelance photographer, in Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man trilogy, and once again in The Spectacular Spider-Man animated series. It is shown in the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles TV series. In the 2006–2012 comic book series The Boys as well as the 2022 third season and 2024 fourth season of its television adaptation, it is depicted as the headquarters of the titular CIA black ops group. Many moviegoers believe that John Wick was filmed at the Flatiron Building. The answer to that is No. The Flatiron Building was not used in John Wick, but the Beaver Building at 1 Wall Street Court was. The Beaver Building was used to film the exterior of the Continental Hotel in the movie and TV series The Continental. The Beaver Building and The Flatiron Building look very similar. What is interesting is that the Beaver Building is also haunted. A bearded man in a suit is sometimes seen on the 6th floor peering into various rooms and when he gets to one particular room, he fades away. Some office workers in The Beaver Building call him the “Suit Guy”.
