Early Cretaceous Vincelestes compared to extant Sarcophilus, the Tasmanian devil
It all depends on how you identify
that big tooth in these two taxa (Figs 1, 2). Is it a canine? Or a canine-like premolar? We’ve seen this tooth shape change earlier in Glironia.

Here a holistic approach
recognizes a long list of shared traits, now including that canine-like premolar in both Early Cretaceous Vincelestes (Fig 1) and extant Sarcophilus (Fig 2), the Tasmanian devil.

As Steve Jobs used to say, “There’s one more thing.”
Phascogale is another extant taxon with a canine-like premolar (Fig 1). Note the ring around the premolar, a somewhat typical structure never seen on canines.
