U of Michigan Board Approves EV Battery Research Project
The University of Michigan Board of Regents has approved a $60 million project to enhance electric vehicle (EV) battery research by expanding the U-M Transportation Research Institute (UMTRI) on North Campus.
Key Details:
- Facility Expansion: The project will add 25,000 square feet to UMTRI, establishing an Electric Vehicle Center (EVC) battery laboratory. This addition will feature three battery laboratories, auxiliary support areas, a substation, and a facility for battery cell testing.
- Funding Source: The expansion is financed entirely by a State of Michigan grant.
- Design and Construction: The architectural firm SmithGroup has been selected to design the project, with design work commencing immediately. A detailed construction timeline will be presented to the Board of Regents upon approval of the schematic design.
- Safety Enhancements: Plans include minor renovations within the existing UMTRI building and the installation of a new on-site fire hydrant to improve emergency response capabilities.
This expansion aims to accelerate innovation, strengthen industry partnerships, and develop a highly skilled workforce to drive the future of electric mobility.
In addition to this project, the U-M Battery Lab is set to nearly double its size with an 8,000-square-foot, off-campus expansion in 2024.
These developments position the University of Michigan as a leader in EV battery research, supporting the automotive industry’s shift toward electrification.
