OTL: Hello Darkness, My Old Friend

Mark Andrews out to lunch

Well, there it is again: that old familiar feeling.

I don’t know that I could put it more succinctly or more accurately than Lamar Jackson did in his post-game availability. Much of the sentiment that you’ll see circulating around the Flock today (and I’m sure for a considerable portion of the offseason) is that the team and the fanbase alike are sick of being so close, and yet so far away.

There was a vocal contingent of fans Sunday night and throughout the last few days that lamented that we all should have known better based on past playoff failings. As much as I hate to buy into the idea that past seasons influenced the present, it’s hard to argue that there’s a pattern.

In years past, we could heap blame onto offensive play-calling, and in one circumstance, Tyler Huntley going rogue at the goal line. Sure, the coaching staff has some difficult questions to answer in terms of not calling any designed runs for Lamar or abandoning the run after a negative play on 1st and Goal from the 1. Otherwise, though, this was about the players and their failure to execute in key situations. Now, you’re dealing with the fallout of those shortcomings, unsure of what shakeups will follow on next year’s roster.

I’ve gotta tell ya, I drew one conclusion from the games this weekend even prior to the Ravens game, but one that was certainly reinforced for me: emotionally divorcing yourself from fandom is one of the healthiest things you could do, because this product is becoming increasingly less watchable…

…but especially so if you’re sick of watching your favorite team blow their season at the goal line again and again. From my seat, it’s difficult to try to put myself at an emotional arm’s length. On the one hand, being objective when it comes to the wins and losses helps create a better product for you guys as readers. On the other hand, being a fan and connecting with the pulse of what the Flock is feeling also does that. Being in the building to interview these players, and connecting with them on a personal basis in some cases, really makes you empathize with how these players and coaches are feeling in the face of the same letdown that’s hit us all so hard. The difference is that we get the luxury of walking away without it having a major impact on our lives, whereas this is the purpose behind which they’ve driven their entire lives.

If I can leave you with one piece of advice: take that luxury and walk away from it for a little while. There’s a reason the offseason exists. Be as upset as you want for a little while, and then spend some time leaning into something else. If you’re still yearning for NFL talk, we’ll be here for you.
