- The Pirates and LHP Andrew Heaney, 33, agreed on a one-year/$5.25M deal. RHP Brett de Geus was DFA’ed to make room on the 40-man roster. Heaney is an 11-year vet (the Bucs will be his sixth club) and a solid backend rotation add; his line the past two years for Texas was 15-20/4.22 in 59 starts (66 outings). He joins Bailey Falter, Johan Oviedo and eventually Bubba Chandler plus some younger guys like Thomas Harrington, Braxton Ashcraft and Mike Burrows in the battle to work behind Paul Skenes, Mitch Keller and Jared Jones. - 1B Spencer Horwitz had the cast and stiches removed from his right wrist; he’s already taking infield (glove-hand only) and BP (one-armed).
- Only two Pittsburgh pups, pitchers Bubba Chandler (#23) and Braxton Ashcraft (#60), made Fangraphs Top 100 Prospects list as compiled by Eric Longenhagen.
- Hector Gomez of MLB Insider reported that RHP Jose Quintana was close to reaching an agreement with the Pirates but declined their offer of $5.5M.
- Mike Lange passed away at the age of 76. Best known for his colorful work in the Penguins booth (“Elvis has just left the building”, “Look out, Loretta”, “Arnold Slick from Turtle Creek”, “Buy Sam a drink and get his dog one too” and too many more to list…), he also did Pirate cable games in 1986-87 with Steve Blass.
- Lefty reliever Scott Sauerbeck, who played for the Bucs from 1999-2003, died of a heart attack way too early at the age of 53. He shares the club record for most games pitched by a LHP in one season (78 in 2002) with Tony Watson.
- Henry Davis had the spring’s first hit, a double. The Pirates first Grapefruit League dinger was walloped by 1B/OF DJ Stewart; he also doubled and had three RBI. Formerly with the Orioles and Mets, he was signed as a NRI during the offseason. Minor-league invitee Matt Gorski was the star of the show, though – he went long twice with a grand-slam and chased home six runs. The Bucs beat the O’s by a 10-5 count.
- They beat the Twins, 5-1, in the home opener the next day behind good pitching (Caleb Ferguson was notable) and a big inning of prospects small ballin’. Konnor Griffin debuted in center, got his first hit, drove in/scored a run and flashed some wheels.

- RHP Carmen Mlodzinski is still trying to carve out a role for himself. He told the media that he’s willing to fill any slot, but is working on being a starter, and he did start the first spring game, albeit working just two innings.
- The club reassigned RHP Sean Sullivan to minor league camp while RHP Yerry Rodríguez has been released.

Other Stuff:
- ESPN and Major League Baseball plan to end their 35-year-old media deal following this season after MLB rejected the network’s attempts to negotiate a cheaper contract, leading ESPN to opt out of the deal’s final two years.
- Since George Steinbrenner’s 1976 edict, no New York Yankee could wear a beard. But the times, they are a’changing – now they can sport “well-groomed” whiskers per the decision of Steinbrenner’s son and Yankees chairman, Hal.
- Last year’s Bucco 1B Rowdy Tellez has signed a minor-league NRI deal with the Seattle Mariners.
- RHP JT Brubaker, whom the Bucs sent to the Yankees last year, was hit in the back by a comebacker, also tweaking his side trying to dodge the ball. His injuries aren’t considered serious and he walked off the mound unaided after being bopped. Tough start for JT, who missed the last two MLB seasons due to TJ surgery and an oblique injury.
