Up Before the BEAK – in the CAUGHT Room…

‘Up before the beak’ means appearing in court before a judge or magistrate. In this illustration, the phrase has been taken literally, with all sorts of beaks in attendance and a nervous stork cowering in the dock. The true origin of the phrase is not known. An engraved illustration from Punch’s Almanack for 1882, published by Punch, London, in 1881. Punch was a British magazine newspaper founded in 1841, famous for its humorous and satirical cartoons which were created by some of the foremost illustrators of the day: the Almanack was a supplement.

In Greek mythology, Medea (‘planner, schemer’) is the daughter of King Aeëtes of Colchis.

Medea is known in most stories as a SORCERESS and is often depicted as a priestess of the goddess Hecate. She first appears in Hesiod‘s Theogony around 700 BCE, but is best known from Euripides‘s tragedy Medea and Apollonius of Rhodes‘s epic Argonautica.

As a daughter of King Aeëtes she is a mythical granddaughter of the sun god Helios and a niece of Circe, an ENCHANTRESS goddess.
