Minnesota – is civil war looming?

The Land of Ten Thousand Lakes – aka The Land of Ten Thousand Flakes to neighboring States to the West and South of Minnesota – has a problem with its government. A new one.

Of course, like many States, Minnesota has a few islands of Democratic strongholds surrounded by a sea of Republicans, as this State House of Representatives map (2024) shows.

Put simply, the State government is broken. In many ways. Minnesota, known as the westernmost of the Scandinavian countries, has nearly 6 million people. In addition to all those lakes (and according to many people, the lakes are the reason that), the State also has 600 billion mosquitos. But the really dangerous parasites that infest the State are its politicians.

Top of the list in the last five years is the man that many people say was the second worst Vice Presidential candidate in American history. (His running mate, those same people say, was the worst, back in 2020.) Tim Walz is not only an embarrassment to his State but to his State of origin, the military profession, the National Guard, and even the education industry. Yet he is a perfect example of the so-called Progressive politicians that are so powerful in the Midwest.

As a member of the Democrat Farm Labor Party (which is different from the national Democratic Party but allied to it), he has a lot of competition for being a problem for the people, businesses, and natural beauty and resources of the State which would prefer its French name (and motto) “Star of the North.” It is not just Democrats, of course. Republicans contribute mightily to the mess.

The new mess? In the 2024 elections and their wake, this “strong” blue State has a split personality when it comes to legislators. The State has 4 DFL and 4 GOP Representatives in DC. They have 33 DFL and 33 GOP State Senators, because a DFL Senator died. They have 67 GOP and 66 DFL Representatives, because a DFL candidate (who won the most votes) committed fraud and broke the law: he didn’t live in the district he was running for! There is a special election on 28 January that the DFL intends to win, which would give them a tie as in the Senate (67-67 representatives).

As readers can imagine, this really frosts the DFL and its legislators. So they aren’t going to put up with it. As reported in various media, they are claiming that the GOP must have 68 members to take control. Why? Apparently, “Just because.” Indeed, the Google AI claims that the DFL has control because they have 68-66 members. Ballotpedia and the Minnesota show that this is “fake news” but we’ve run into this nonsense before.

So the DFL are taking matters into their own hands: they snuck around and swore all the DFL members into office with a compliant judge in a secret ceremony someplace other than the State Capitol. And they are going to deny the GOP a quorum. The DFL claims that a “majority” of members is 68. The GOP claims that since there is a vacant seat, a majority is just 67. And by sneaking off, none of the DFL representatives were in the chamber – and apparently, party disciple and loyalty will keep all of them out until they elect a new DFL representative to replace the crook. Then they will be in charge.

So Minnesota apparently does not have a functional government right now. Which is certainly no skin off the nose of any free-market anarchist or most all Libertarians. But…

Violence has been vaguely and generally threatened by various members of the DFL and the public. (No doubt there are GOP hotheads as well, but no news of them.) And tempers are flaring.

Exactly what form this threatened violence might take is unknown, of course. Especially since even if a DFL guy or gal wins the 28 January election, it will still be split 67-67. (Note that the Lieutenant Governor, a DFL, is able to break a tie vote in the Senate, but the Speaker of the House is generally a member of the “majority” party. And there may not be a majority party.

So is this why violence is threatened? To persuade a GOP type to betray his or her comrades and vote for a DFL Speaker? Or is it to convince a weak-willed DFL type to be the Judas? Who knows?

Childish political games? Of course. But at stake are billions of dollars and the impact on millions of people. Why? Because Americans have been bamboozled into believing that any mandatory government is legitimate and concerned about the liberty of all Minnesotans – or Americans.
