They have itching ears…
Really?
There have been more than a few followers of Christ Jesus (and many who follow the Law of Moses) who have objected vehemently to the actions proposed by The Donald’s DOGE and his eeevviilll henchman or alter ego Elon. Actions to cut USAID providing assistance to millions around the world. Actions to scrub Social Security and Medicare and Medicaid rolls of liars, cheats, and dead people. Actions to cut the bloated payroll of the FedGov.
Let us put aside the growing evidence that USAID paid a lot more money to people and companies who were not poor and helpless. That government “entitlement” programs always have parasites and con artists that should be dealt with, and that people who need that assistance are not being targeted. The obvious fact is that FedGov employees no longer enjoy the security of government jobs (joining private company employees and junior military personnel working “at will”).
When did we who claim to be followers of Christ Jesus, or obedient to the Law of Moses decide that we didn’t need to do those things commanded by God? (And even those who worship Allah “the Merciful” need to ask that?) When did we think that we could designate government to be our agent and take our money to care for the sick, the weak, the young, the helpless, and the homeless?
An SF short story, Robert Sheckley’s “The Battle“, tells the story of the final Battle of Armageddon in which the humans on God’s side use robots to fight and defeat the demonic hordes of Satan. The victory won, the Lord’s angels descend to take the victorious, and their dead and wounded, to Heaven. The humans who built and ordered the robots into battle are naturally shocked when the angels ascend again to heaven bearing the broken hulks of the robots.
Tell us, please, where in the Bible (Old or New Testament) or the Quran, are we told that we are to be benevolent to the sick, the poor, the widows, the orphans, the helpless? Almost everyone will be able to find the citations. But – show me where the Creator commanded that benevolence be done by (a) letting government steal our money, (b) skimming whatever off the top, and (c) giving whatever is left to those truly in need. (While doing such a poor job of it that much of what is given is stolen by con artists and various and sundry criminal types?)
We dare you to tell us where. Honestly.
But we don’t think you can. And we believe that those who claim to be religious and object to what DOGE is proposing to Congress are blind to the reality. If you and I want to help the poor and helpless, we (or most of us) have two hands and feet and brains, and at least a little bit of money (well, mostly FRNs) in our pockets: we can help them directly. And no doubt doing a better job of avoiding the scammers that government agencies are.
And with the FedGov not “having” to steal billions and trillions of dollars from us to fund all these things that The Donald and Elon (and a few others) are pointing out, we may even have a few more bogus dollars in our pockets to do more to help others. To quote the biblical writer James, “pure and genuine religion is this, to look after orphans and widows in their distress and to keep oneself from being polluted by the world.”
May we submit that letting government do it – with money stolen from us and others – is a great example of being polluted by the world.
