Matthew Huttle, 42, of Hobart, was killed Sunday afternoon near the Jasper and Pulaski county line after an alleged altercation with law enforcement. According to the Indiana State Police, Huttle was pulled over on State Road 14 at approximately 4:15 p.m. by a Jasper County Sheriff’s deputy.
Authorities say the traffic stop escalated when the deputy attempted to arrest Huttle. It’s unclear what led to the attempted arrest, but state police report that Huttle resisted and a physical struggle ensued. During the altercation, the deputy fired his weapon, killing Huttle.
The details surrounding the incident remain murky, with police not yet releasing information on why Huttle was being taken into custody or the exact circumstances that led to the fatal shooting. The Indiana State Police are investigating the shooting, which is standard procedure in officer-involved fatalities.
State police report that Huttle had a firearm during the traffic stop. However, details about the altercation with the deputy and the reasons for Huttle’s arrest have not been disclosed.

“An altercation took place between the suspect and the officer, which resulted in the officer firing his weapon and fatally wounding the suspect,” a press release read. Sheriff Patrick Williamson called for an Indiana State Police investigation. He also stated that the deputy involved has been placed on paid administrative leave, following department policy.
“Our condolences go out to the family of the deceased as any loss of life is traumatic to those that were close to Mr. Huttle,” Williamson said. “I will release the officer’s name once I have approval from the State Police Detectives.”
Federal sources told FOX59 that Huttle was recently pardoned by President Trump. Huttle, along with his uncle, Dale Huttle from Crown Point, were arrested for participating in the January 6th U.S. Capitol breach.
Matthew Huttle was later located and apprehended in Boise, Idaho. According to the FBI, Huttle was inside the Capitol for about 10 minutes, although he stayed on the Capitol grounds for several hours.
“I have no regrets. I will not say I’m sorry,” Dale Huttle said regarding his and his nephew Matthew’s participation. Both Huttles were convicted for their roles in going into the Capitol. Matthew Huttle received a six-month federal prison sentence followed by 12 months of supervised release. His prison term concluded on July 17, 2024, federal records indicate.
Nicholas Barnes, who has been Huttle’s lawyer for approximately 10 years, primarily representing him in driving and alcohol-related cases, was surprised at Huttle’s involvement in the Jan. 6 breach. He is keen to learn more about the circumstances that led to his client’s fatal shooting on Sunday.
“To my knowledge,” he said in an interview, “Matthew was a nonviolent individual, so I know the Indiana State Police are investigating the encounter and I will be very interested to read their findings.”
On January 20, President Trump issued clemency to over 1,500 individuals tied to the January 6 Capitol breach, including pardons for most and commutations for seditious conspiracy convictions.
