Excerpt:
In Melbourne’s north-eastern suburb of Bellfield is an operation called Farm Raiser, which grows crops on an acre of land.
The land, surrounded by tower blocks and other buildings, is currently growing a range of summer vegetables and salad greens, as well as dahlias, sunflowers and fruit.
Urban farmer Charlotte Bartlett-Wynne says they started the farm knowing they wanted to focus on food security, to help people access high-quality, healthy food without stress.
Eve Fraser helps farm the land with Charlotte, Patrick Turnbull and Kirsty Edwards, who met while studying horticulture at the Burnley campus of Melbourne University. Farm Raiser was founded in 2018 and they planted their first crops in 2020. Eve arrived as a volunteer two years later and never left.
Kirsty says her fellow gardeners have become her best mates, and they’ve stumbled upon a great dynamic partnership, each bringing different skills.
Patrick was living near the Bellfield site while studying. “I knew I wanted to live in the city but also grow food – the best of both worlds,” he says. The site used to be a secondary school oval but when the school changed to special-development focus, the land became surplus and was leased to the farm.
