Inner ear study involving ‘Afrotheria’
Grunstra et al 2025
showed that “in Afrotheria, a monophyletic clade with morphologically and ecologically
highly disparate species, inner ear shape has evolved similar adaptations as in
non-afrotherian mammals.”
Unfortunately, the trait-based large reptile tree (LRT, 2336 taxa) does not recover a monophyletic gene-based clade Afrotheria. So this team stumbled at the start.
This is OK in Academia, where paleo myths persist for decades unchecked and untested. If it’s in the textbooks, it must be true.
The Grunsta et al study reminds me of the Pterodaustro ankle study that also focused on tiny bones, ignoring the big picture. Seems like busy work…
Caption from their figure 3:
“Sea cows, golden moles, tenrecs and tree hyraxes all belong to Afrotheria, a morphologically and ecologically very diverse group of mammals.”
They forgot to mention elephants. None of these taxa nest close to one another in the LRT, which also tests fossils. Gene studies produce gaffs like this. Avoid gene studies.
Darwin must be rolling over in this grave. This list does not make sense. You will never find transitional taxa linking the taxa in this list in a monophyletic clade, exclusive of other clades. The LRT falsified Afrotheria many years ago, and yet in 2025 it persists.
