OTL: Sweet, Merciful Bye Week

Tyler Linderbaum locker OTL

The BYE week is mercifully upon us. If you’re feeling anything like I am, you need it about as badly as the players do.

It’s been a while since the Ravens had a loss that felt this deflating, and in the immediate aftermath, I was considering all of the reasons why. After all, in our Bold Predictions column coming into this one, I had predicted that old issues would reappear and lead to a loss, so I had mentally prepared myself a bit. Maybe it was just being so accustomed to this team’s recent dominance over NFC opponents that we get a little jaded about how tough these matchups are. Maybe it was the loss of ground in the AFC North race, which is certainly no small part of it. For me, what it came down to was feeling like the Ravens got thoroughly outplayed in almost every aspect of the game, which hasn’t happened in a while.

Credit where credit is due to the defense: despite allowing 24 points, they improved in multiple facets of the game. The Eagles tend to start their games slowly, but it’s still worth mentioning that they were able to shut out Philly’s offense in the first quarter. The ticky-tack penalties were more under control and they were able to keep the game close despite the offense’s struggles, and being put in poor field position due to the struggles of Justin Tucker and Jordan Stout, until late in the game.

Still, it wasn’t all pretty. A.J. Brown basically had his pick of where he wanted to go on the field in the early going, and facing an offense that was without DeVonta Smith, it was concerning to see the secondary struggle to contain Brown without the added threat that Smith would’ve brought. Granted, they had to balance the relentless threat of Saquon Barkley, and they would eventually get worn down as the game went on. I don’t really blame the defense much for that, though; it’s hard not to get worn down in a cold-weather game against a strong rushing opponent when you can’t get off the field.

The offense was out of sync all day, a glaring departure from what we’ve seen for most of the year. We know they have the pieces, and it seemed like the struggles were a multi-faceted issue. They had to steer away from the run as the game progressed simply because they were playing catch-up, but the coaching staff once again got gun-shy when the Eagles defense began to slow down Derrick Henry on the inside lanes. For whatever reason, they hesitated to let Henry get outside, where he’s been having the most success this year, and I suspect that it was the toss play that went awry that convinced the coaching staff not to try it again. The other factor was that the Eagles defense absolutely molly-whopped the O-line.

Lamar Jackson was pressured on over half of his offensive snaps on Sunday, despite being blitzed only six times. This game needs to be a wake-up call that your best players have to be out there, period. Daniel Faalele has shown some nice development, and that’s awesome. Patrick Mekari is a nice utility guy to fill out the depth chart at multiple positions. That said, there is no version of events where they were better than Andrew Voorhees and Ben Cleveland would’ve been on Sunday, and the coaching staff has to figure it out in a hurry.

My concern is that they’ll continue hand-wringing, as they have with a few other issues, that continue to crop up and get exacerbated, and that they now have to worry about during this week off. Whether those issues are now focused on depth replacements due to injury…

…or figuring out why certain players aren’t in the lineup even with said injuries.

Even the special teams unit, which has been much-maligned with Tucker’s continued issues, had problems that weren’t isolated to their kicking team.

I have to tell you how grateful I am that this time has an extra week to reset. Late in the season, they need all the rest and planning time they can get, and hopefully this will be the turning point where the coaching staff asks themselves the hard questions and makes the adjustments they need to. As much as I hope that’s the case, history makes it tough to believe that a single extra week will be the thing that rights the ship, but at the very least, it spares us of the shenanigans for a little while longer.
