Chicago Bears pass catcher named as top potential cap casualty in 2025

NFL: Chicago Bears Minicamp

The Chicago Bears offense is expected to make drastic changes in 2025 with Ben Johnson leaving the Detroit Lions to become the new head coach at Halas Hall.

Johnson will be Caleb Williams’ third head coach in the league in the quarterback’s second season. Whoever Johnson names as the Bears offensive coordinator will be Williams’ fourth offensive coordinator. (Johnson is expected to be the Bears’ playcaller.)

One reason the Bears had to make all of those coaching changes during the season and in the offseason was because the team hired offensive coordinator Shane Waldron last January. Waldon brought in a tight end he was familiar with but didn’t play well for in Chicago.

The Chicago Bears would save $6.5 million by cutting a TE

Alex Ballentine of Bleacher Report suggested tight end Gerald Everett is a likely cap casualty for the Bears. Cutting Everett would save Chicago $6.5 million.

“The Bears are on the books for $11.6 million for Cole Kmet and $6.5 million for Gerald Everett,” Ballentine wrote. “It’s a lot of money to have tied up into the tight end position for an offense that was inept for most of the season. Kmet was one of Caleb William’s most reliable receivers. He caught 47 of his 55 targets for 474 yards and four touchdowns.

“Gerald Everett, however, was rarely involved. He only had eight catches for 36 yards in 17 games.
Everett will be 31 next season and is clearly second fiddle to Kmet in the pecking order. Not much of his 2025 cap number is guaranteed. The Bears could cut him and get $5.5 million in cap relief.”

Gerald Everett never fit on the Bears in 2024

Everett, who signed a two-year contract in March, never felt like he fit in the Bears offense in 2024. Per Pro Football Focus, the former second-round pick by the Los Angeles Rams earned a 42.9 overall grade with Chicago, the worst grade of his eight-year NFL career.

Cutting the 30-year-old would give general manager Ryan Poles more cash to give Johnson help in the trenches in the free agency. Per Spotrac, Chicago enters the offseason with $69.3 million in cap space, the fourth-most cap space in the league.

Cutting Everett should be a no-brainer for Poles.
