The Chicago Bears are still searching far and wide for their next head coach to propel them to success next season.

With the Detroit Lions officially eliminated from the playoffs and their stunning loss to the Washington Commanders, both coordinators Ben Johnson and Aaron Glenn are officially available to interview in person for the position. The Bears will figure to heavily pursue Johnson more than Glenn, with him primed to take the New York Jets job.

The Bears, in their head coaching search, will look to interview a surprising candidate for the position in a new report.

According to FOX Sports Jay Glazer reports that the Bears will interview Tennessee State University Head Coach and veteran running back in the NFL Eddie George to potentially be their next head coach.

The nine-year NFL veteran played for the Houston Oilers/Tennessee Titans and the Dallas Cowboys. George was a solid NFL running back with 10,441 yards, and 68 touchdowns, for a catch rate of 74.4% in 141 games for his career. George was also a 4x Pro-Bowler, 3x All-Pro, the Offensive Rookie of the Year, and finished in the top three for the MVP voting once in 2000 where he had 1,509 yards, 14 TDs, and 1,962 yards from scrimmage.

George was hired as the 22nd head football coach for Tennessee State University back in April of 2021. George led his tigers to a very productive season in which they had a 9-4 record with a 6-2 record in conference, scoring 26.77 points per game while holding opponents to 24.23 points. The Tigers also scored 16 rushing touchdowns, 24 passing touchdowns, for 45 overall which is not too shabby.

Would George be the right fit for the Bears?

The Bears need an offensive-minded head coach and with George being a former running back who was great at his position he could fit the bill. The success rate of former players becoming a head coach in the league and getting the best out of their players is high with the Lions Dan Campbell and Titians DeMeco Ryans proving that (even if they were eliminated from the playoffs).

The Bears will interview George in person and the interview will be held in Halas Hall this morning per ESPN’s Courtney Cronin:

The interview would also fulfill the Rooney Rule for the Bears, allowing them to make a hire within the week if they wished.

The 51-year-old Geroge could figure to be the perfect balance the Bears need for their head coach. The league is trending towards younger and less experienced head coaches to hire so they can grow with their young and future franchise quarterbacks. George is still young enough but has some years under him that he could provide both the youthful energy and experience both Caleb Williams and the Bears need to flip their record next season from 5-12 to 12-5. With Glazer reporting the interview is occurring today, we shall know soon how well it went and if George has a real shot for the job.
