Chicago Bulls blow up roster for rebuild, deal Zach LaVine to rival in proposed trade

The Chicago Bulls enter their matchup with the Golden State Warriors on Thursday night with a 19-25 record. The sub-.500 record places the Bulls at No. 10 in the Eastern Conference, setting the team up for another play-in opportunity in the postseason if the trends stay the same the rest of the season.

The Bulls’ midseason record is close to what their record has been in the last two seasons. Chicago is stuck in mediocrity, and the team needs to blow up their roster and rebuild if they ever want to play meaningful basketball in May and June.

A three-way trade to send Zach LaVine to the Detroit Pistons

James L. Edwards of The Athletic came up with a three-way trade proposal that would help the Bulls rebuild. The New York Knicks would receive Isaiah Stewart and Torrey Craig. The Bulls’ rival, the Detroit Pistons would get Zach LaVine and Precious Achiuwa.

Chicago would claim:

“Tim Hardaway Jr., Mitchell Robinson, Simone Fontecchio, a 2025 second-round pick from New York (via Detroit), a 2026 second-round pick from New York (via Detroit, Orlando or Milwaukee), a 2027 second-round pick from Detroit and a 2028 second-round pick from Detroit (via New York).”

Darnell Mayberry thinks the Bulls should consider this trade idea

Darnell Mayberry of The Athletic argued the trade would help Chicago rebuild.

“The Bulls can begin life after LaVine and will have successfully traded his contract without having to attach additional assets,” Mayberry wrote. “Robinson would give the Bulls a sorely needed athletic big who can block shots and finish lobs. But the Bulls have displayed little interest in second-round picks.

“It would be atypical of them to value four second-round selections, and that might be the sticking point in this scenario. But that doesn’t mean it’s one the Bulls shouldn’t consider.”

A rebuild without LaVine is necessary

The Bulls have been frustratingly picky about how to attack trades and a potential rebuild. But they need to sober up to the reality that they have no successful future with LaVine, a player they made a catastrophic mistake by signing him to a max contract.

Chicago doesn’t have great options in the trade market for LaVine, but Edward’s trade proposal is a blueprint for how the Bulls can navigate negotiations so they have to give up too much in return for an overpaid and under-consistent shooting guard.

Let LaVine become Detroit’s problem.
